Whenever your desktop computer starts to run slow then take a quick look at your hard drive light.  You will probably see it flashing away even though you have not just loaded a program.  This is normally because the computer has run out of memory to run the programs and files that you currently have open.  When this occurs, the computer has  run out of memory. Most systems will then use a tiny piece of hard drive space as RAM memory, so that it can continue to operate.  This memory is very slow compared to the RAM memory installed in your computer.  So how do you make your computer fast in this situation? Yep, it’s time to add some more memory.

It depends on your particular computer as to what type of memory you need.  The easiest way to find out is to look inside your machine and see what is already there.  If you have two spare slots then you are good to go.  If not, then you will need to remove the memory that is already present and purchase a matching pair of more than is currently present.

When fitting the new memory, make sure that the two retaining clips at each end of the connector are unlocked by pushing outwards away from the connector.  Then, it’s just a case of pushing the memory home into the connector until it clicks into place.  Just make sure you have the memory the correct way round by matching up the notch in the memory with the tag on the connector. The two retaining clips will jump back and securely lock the memory in place.

That’s it, you’re done and ready to switch on your computer again, but now it will stop slowing down all the time.

Please note, take care when installing memory into your computer as ESD (Electrostatic discharge) can damage the memory.
