Clever Idea Meets Poor Design

Shake Flashlight

Do not get too excited about the brightness of this torch. With today’s super efficient, super bright LED torches, this torch sits right down the bottom of the list. I mean way down the bottom.

I have had many years of electronics training and completely understand the technology and concept behind this torch. I was intrigued as to how good this type of product could be made with low current LED’s and modern day capacitors. Unfortunately, it was very much a let down.

The concept behind this product has been around for a very long time. By passing a magnet through a coil of wire a current is induced into the coil. When the magnet passes down the tube the brief burst of energy is passed through a circuit. As the magnet passes back up the tube a burst of energy with the opposite direction is produced. These two bursts of current are first passed through a bridge rectifier so that the two bursts of energy are of the same polarity. They are then passed into a high capacity capacitor to hole the charge ready for use. The problem is these little bursts of energy are not enough to light even an LED to any sort of usable level.

The only impressive feature is the on/off switch. So as to be robust and long lasting, the switch moves a magnet over a magnetic reed switch. Using this method the switch contacts will not corrode or ware out. However, the slider kept sticking and proved very difficult to use.

To conclude, clever concept, poor execution, poor product. A candle would light up the room far more effectively. I can see very few practical uses for this product.

I received this product at a reduced rate for an honest and unbiased review which I have given after using this product.

I do hope you found this review useful.
